Below Deck 13, Episode 3: Rich Hippies, Crane Rope, Red Wine in Bed, Chips & Nuts & Artistically Cut Fruit, Much More!

Alex, the lead deckhand, is already making some mistakes, and Captain Kerry is also beginning to see it. That is even before the loss of the crane rope. He had a team meeting that was more of a powwow than any strategic talk. Kerry called the first charter run a practice of sort while calling for a lot more efficiency by the deck team and lead deckhand. Alex’s team responded by being late to work because they were drinking the night before, which is more of a disrespect issue than anything else. But that, in itself, is no good, and also, I think he needs to be more self-aware because he is acting pretty mellow about the situation. Like I alluded to here, the Captain is already feeling it.

At one point, while he was setting up the slide before the guests arrived, he interrupted the Captain, and the deckhand Matt basically saved everything by setting up the slide correctly. The problem with Matt is that he also wants that lead deckhand gig. However, Captain Kerry sent Alex on the midnight excursion night one on kayaks to do the paddling for the guests. Matt is upset because Alex gets to do what he called ‘fun stuff’ while he takes down the slide he put up that day. The problem I have with Matt is that he needs to think: it was Captain Kerry that told Alex to do the kayak excursion. It was not Matt’s decision. Regardless, Alex does still need to ‘prove himself as a bosun,’ as Kerry stated, but he does like how he handles the guests so far.

The guests this week are a definite handful for the staff. They want their fruit ‘artistically cut,’ whatever that means, and that brought Moe to ask himself, ‘like it’s gonna make it taste different,’ and so, if you use that light demand as the basis, it is going to be a long charter for the crew.

Carolyn and her so-called partner, Robby, arrived with Robby’s sister, Melani, and a few ‘healers,’ along with their so-called ‘inner circle.’ These ‘spiritual healers’ like their wine at a specific temperature, which I get; however, I think you may need to bend on that issue while on a yacht. However, it would not be far-fetched to have wine fridge set correct.

Kaylee called the guests ‘rich hippies.’

Also, they have a laundry list of needs, which, honestly, I lost track of what they were saying in that dreamlike segment. What struck home for me, because I too tend to wake up at like 3 AM nightly, and even though I call it excessive, is that Melani wants a glass of wine on her night table so when she wakes up at that hour, the wine is right by her side to drink up to fall right back to sleep. It’s honestly quite clever because that way, you do not have to fumble around in your kitchen seeking that glass of wine to drink before falling back to sleep. Personally, I do not like drinking that late because I get up at like 5 or 6 anyway, and therefore, I put the TV on and back sleeping any minute. I just would not announce it to the Bravo world, and I would just take a glass to my room myself rather than making it a formal request. Rosa brought the glass of red wine to Carolyn’s cabin by mistake, and so, if you set that aside, Melani also requested chips and nuts in her room. I am not sure if Rainbeau thought that it was a joke, but she totally forgot to bring any to her room. Then, to confuse matters worse, while Melani was trying to find Rainbeau, she did run into Rosa, who did not know about the ordering of the chips and nuts. That was also when Melanie mentioned that the glass of red wine was never brought to her room. Rosa brought the wine to Carolyn’s room, but after it gets sorted out, they get the wine from Carolyn, while Rosa brings up her some more chips and nuts to Melani’s room.

Now remember, the interior caught that final statement on the first charter’s outro when the primary guest stated that, to paraphrase, it was clear this staff has not worked together. The problem with this job is that all of the standards and requests come with the territory, considering these guests are renting a yacht for however many days.

I do not condone it all, and all I can ask is that: have you seen the Salt Lake City’s Housewives episodes on Below Deck? They were not only demanding guests; they were also so loud, and they did not stop screaming for 3 days. 2 to 3 people were all yelling at the same time constantly on that trip. There are no guests like them or on that horrid level.

By the way, did I hear that the Southern Charm people were doing a Below Deck coming up, or was that in one of my dreams?

Anyway, Moe is impressive so far. He is also a workhorse. Plus, he seems totally cool as a human. These guests, however, expect fine dining, whereas Moe is the self-proclaimed ‘ugly-delicious’ guy. He does make a vital mistake allowing strawberry’s to be set up on the charcuterie board when Melanie is allergic to them. Carolyn eats caviar for breakfast, which I am not sure why I am even saying that sentence. My first reaction is, ew, gross, but at the same time, that may not be such a bad thing to eat for breakfast. I feel like it could give you energy. I do not think I was ever served caviar for breakfast, but then again, it is not like I eat caviar ever, so who knows if it happened back in the day. I think what I am getting it is that its sounds pretentious.

Regardless, Moe cooks dinner that started with his Thai crab salad, kingfish with curry sauce, and a chocolate matcha cake. Captain Kerry does the dishes for Moe as the guests start commenting on everything, from Melanie needing salty food to the Champagne not being cold enough, and not only that, I think she also said it was undrinkable. Melanie also wanted anchovies, of all salty snacks, which, according to Fraser, I believe, is not on their preference sheets. If it is not on a preference sheet, it is not going to be on the boat unless the staff guesses, and that is a lofty guess. According to Fraser, by dinner, the guests commented and complained about the following: ‘Wine (champagne too warm; wine needs temperature adjusted; stabilizers not working?; salt not good; lime not great; wine glasses not nice).’ I loved how Robby asks Fraser how to deal with the temperature of the wine, which gets done while storing it in the wine fridge.

As for the wine mistake to Carolyn’s room, I am not sure where the instruction got lost from Fraser to Rosa or Rainbeau, but Melani lied, saying that Rosa told her ‘emphatically’ that only Carolyn gets wine next to her bed. Rainbeau just point-blank forgot about the chips and nuts. It was a tiny bit hard to watch because I saw it happening, or not happening, and there is the point when you realize she totally forgot, and on she went as the confusion grew when the night moved on.

It was another time frame when one could say that you can say that it is obvious that these guys have never worked together.

Fraser says that he believes Rosa over the ‘witch,’ and honestly, I do not think he cares about it. Rosa knows about the mistake and makes it clear to Fraser, which led him to react, saying that she ‘did nothing wrong.’ She is getting a pass because, again, I am not sure when and where this was lost in its translation, so to speak.

Next, what was the deal with regard to Rainbeau speaking with her new English accent? Did that just start right then when they showed it, and was she really trying to make pretend that she comes from England? Or was she just playing around and forgot to stop, because she did it in front of actual staff and guests? It is not like she was walking around alone in your house doing the James Bond accent like I do, but anyway, if she was really trying to get the guests to think that she is from England, man, oh man, would that be hard to upkeep. The reason I ask is because she actually said how Kaylee and Rosa’s accents were the reason why she picked it up or started to talk that way. I get it. It is cool to have an accent like that; however, like Fraser, I was like, huh? Plus, again, she did it in front of guests and staff people. Doing it alone in your own room is one thing, much like she did after Fraser did not like her table design. He related it to going abroad and coming back with an accent, or something about a croissant and France.

On the outside, Sen loses the crane rope after dropping it in the water. Kerry is pissed off. He thinks Alex’s reaction was very slow to act, saying that they should have had a floated weight to keep it afloat, which, when that happens, they could easily find it that way. That is a huge blunder by the deck staff. Overall, Kerry is correct. I would be so pissed if my crew lost something that is vitally needed to store the wave runner. Kerry then uttered that he may have to ‘make changes,’ which is not good. I can tell you right now about that foreshadow: it is not good for Alex. By the way, Matt, I have to presume that if Alex gets cut, Kerry has to find someone else off the boat and that he has worked with before. That’s the key for a great bosun. The Captain and the bosun need to be totally in sync, and the Captain needs to not worry about the bosun’s job duties. Otherwise, it becomes bad when the yacht’s needs are not met. The Captain needs to worry about boat, and the bosun needs to make sure he can execute many things, like docking and setting up slides.

As for the love in the air, Moe is playing matchmaker by letting out that Matt likes Kaylee to each of them, and, not in a bad way, he made no bones about being the conduit, and Matt at least agreed. Kaylee then seemed into it when Moe told of the plan, and that relationship is headed for disaster. Kaylee likes giving men second chances, which means Matt has the ability to be with Kaylee, and at least one time, he can also flirt with randoms when they go out at night. If that does not work for him, he can then fall back on Kaylee for the night. Like I said, that will not end well. He already is trying to act cool and laid-back, saying that Kaylee is a bit over the top into him compared to him liking her. He also makes the rookie mistake of telling Kaylee that they should be exclusive, which is just a way to lead a girl on, which I get; you are on a boat working together 24 hours a day. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If you want to just hook up with cameras on you, so be it. However, you cannot bring random women on the boat, and I assume that you can’t just go to some woman’s hotel to hook up. You have each other, and that is it. One thing you should do is to make sure that is the person you want to connect with because if you start liking someone else after hooking up, is not tenable, as we found out on the last Below Deck.

That day, Matt told James that he will be ‘having banter with the other girls,’ even though he is on some phony self-awareness kick and even though je is supposedly exclusive with Kaylee. He does mention how is not into anyone else (yet). Rainbeau called James ‘eye candy.’ They also flirt by hugging a lot. James also claims now that he is in a relationship with the women he lives with outside of the yacht. I think that he is allowed to cuddle in bed, but he is not allowed to have actual sex. But if you want to cuddle with people, I doubt you are highly into that other person, because if you were, being with others would disgust you. He did claim it is an open relationship, and at the same time, I think he claimed he was single a couple of episodes ago. Kaylee says that he may be a so-called ‘fuck boy,’ and then we had Sen and Alex making out at least one time, but I am not sure where that will go now. If Alex gets canned, it will be done, I suppose, unless it gets serious fast.
