Last Friday was the first day in three weeks without a terminal session. The real, human traffic now sits around 12 to 15 thousand a day, which is the honest number, and worth every hour it took to get there.

The latest episode closes on a genuine cliffhanger. Trapped in the back of a van awaiting execution, Reacher offers Detective Green, played by Sydelle Noel, a piece of hard won philosophy about living and dying on your own terms, the kind of quiet wisdom that’s always made him more than just a guy who wins fights.

Sharp eyed fans will recognize the sentiment. A close variation traces back to Lee Child’s 1999 novel Tripwire, the third book in the series, during a scene at the funeral of Reacher’s former commanding officer. In the book it’s an internal thought rather than something said aloud, but the show has clearly adapted the idea into dialogue, implying Reacher once shared it with Jodie, the officer’s daughter, a character who hasn’t appeared on screen but has been referenced through the investigation.

Every season pulls loosely from one of the novels, and this one is threading Gone Tomorrow with a chronology that runs noticeably different from the book. Season 5 is confirmed to adapt 2015’s Make Me, but a full Tripwire adaptation down the line wouldn’t be a surprise given how much the show has already borrowed from it. Two episodes remain, with the finale landing September 16, and it’s safe money that Reacher makes it out of that van.

Police showed up over a noise complaint about the yacht’s after hours DJ, arriving a full hour after the music had already stopped, and Captain Sandy talked her way out of a citation before it went anywhere. New deckhand Massi made an immediate impression, sharp, funny, and refreshingly unbothered by the Joe and Nathan tension simmering below deck.

Speaking of which, Joe’s continued fixation on Nathan is starting to wear thin, especially with Massi now working closely with the very person Joe seems most threatened by. Meanwhile Coop and Kat’s not so secret fling finally boiled over, Kat in tears, Gen fed up with being caught in the middle, and a mystery bouquet signed only “Ma Reine” turning out to be from Luke, meant for Joy. Gen’s reaction said everything her words didn’t.

And in the category of pure chaos: Aesha’s drunk dance routine into the DJ’s laptop, followed by a full night of eating ramen in the van, is somehow one of the most consistent bits of the season.
