The owner behind 5Church in Midtown and Buckhead is opening a tapas restaurant featuring live music and salsa dancing. Alta Toro takes over the former Babalu Tapas and Tacos space this spring at the corner of Peachtree Place and West Peachtree in Midtown.

The name, which translates to “high bull” in Spanish, is a phrase associated with bullfighting and that of an energetic and powerful bull in the ring. Owner Ayman Kamel hopes to capture that high energy in the food served at Alta Toro. Look for paella, pig roasts, and a variety of tapas dishes styled after those found in Spain and countries throughout Latin America paired cocktails and a mostly Latin American wine and beer list.

That high energy theme continues in the design for Alta Toro, with colorful custom art pieces by local and Latin American artists on the walls and plenty of open spaces in the dining room for live bands to play and for people to dance. A large tree sculpture, complete with lights hanging from its sprawling branches, will act as a showpiece in the middle of the dining room. Large garage doors will open to a covered patio out front, where more dancing and live-fire cooking may also take place in the warmer months.

Once open this spring, Alta Toro will offer dinner, weekday lunch, and weekend brunch.
