Public media leader Anthony V. Hayes taking over top job at WMHT

NORTH GREENBUSH — WMHT Public Media, the region’s public television operation, has hired Anthony V. Hayes to replace Robert Altman, who is stepping down this year after 15 years as president and chief executive of WMHT.

Hayes was most recently general manager and chief operating officer of New England Public Media in Springfield, Mass., about an hour and a half drive from Albany.

Altman announced his plans to step down in July 2022. Hayes, who is a native of Queens, is the sixth person to lead WMHT, which was founded 70 years ago. He was chosen by the WMHT board after a nationwide search led by Livingston Associates, a Colorado executive search firm that specializes in public media.

Hayes was also previously general manager of WGBY-TV in Springfield and led the PBS station’s merger with New England Public Radio in 2019.

“Anthony is the right person at the right time to lead WMHT Public Media into an exciting future,” Shelby Schneider, the chair of the WMHT board of trustees, said in a statement. “We are exceptionally fortunate to welcome a respected public media executive with an impeccable reputation.”

Schneider said Hayes is a “proven leader, recognized visionary, prolific fundraiser, and community advocate committed to local programming.”

Hayes begins his tenure on Jan. 23.

“He is a superb choice who will raise WMHT’s profile as an essential public service provider dedicated to uplifting the lives of the people and communities we are entrusted to serve,” Schneider said.

Hayes has also held public media executive roles in Connecticut and the Washington, D.C., area. He is married with three adult sons. Hayes earned a bachelor’s in fine arts from the New York Institute of Technology and a master of arts in media from American University.

WMHT has a viewing audience that stretches from the Adirondacks to parts of Westchester County and the Berkshires. It operates several TV and radio channels and offers streaming programming.
