Michigan’s favorite Christmas movie is “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” – and we’re not alone, according to a recent study.

The study by Wishlisted analyzed Google Trends to determine the most popular Christmas movie in each state. Specifically, they took the top 25 Christmas movies from IMDb’s Top 100 Christmas Movies list and analyzed search popularity data in Google Trends by state from Nov. 24, 2021 (the day before Thanksgiving) to Jan. 2, 2022.

Out of the 25 movies, only eight turned out to be state favorites: “Die Hard,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Gremlins,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Love Actually,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Shop Around the Corner.”

“Christmas Vacation” is far and away the most popular, coming out on top in 40 states, including Michigan. Our Midwest neighbors, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, also all love the movie.

The comedy from 1989 depicts a big family Christmas that goes horribly – and hilariously – wrong. It stars Chevy Chase as Christmas enthusiast and disaster magnet Clark Griswold and Beverly D’Angelo as his patient and supportive wife Ellen Griswold.

Here’s the national top 5:

  1. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”
  2. “It’s a Wonderful Life”
  3. “Die Hard”
  4. “The Nightmare Before Christmas”
  5. “Home Alone”
