Born and raised in San Antonio, Arnold Mendoza has certainly made a name for himself in the short of amount of time he has led the tasty sandwich shop, Broadway Delicatessen. Located in downtown San Antonio, it’s perfectly placed spot has seen its fair amount of foot traffic since occupying the space for about a year.
Broadway Deli, as the locals call it, is not only your hometown joint but a place to convene with friends and family, a place for tourists to fill their bellies after walking the River Walk and a place to talk shop with the owner. After hearing so many positive reviews, I wanted to see if Broadway Deli lived up to its reputation.

Once inside, I was directed to the stack of menus on top of the counter and mulled over what I wanted. After going back and forth, I settled on the “Jersey City” sandwich, which had Italian beef served on a hot Italian roll, topped with giardiniera, provolone, and au jus served on the side. Now this sandwich is not for the faint at heart. I wasn’t expecting a jolt of fire from the habanero peppers buried under the cheese. However, this sandwich was definitely full of flavor, and the meat was tender and juicy.

Not a sandwich fan? Try one of the deli’s popular hotdogs, which got rave reviews from my mom. She ordered the “Manhattan.” It’s an all beef Frank, served on a roll, topped with sauerkraut and dressed with spicy mustard. Before I had time to ask how it tasted, she had already scarfed down half the hotdog. Needless to say, she enjoyed every bite.
