President Biden Asks Congress For An Additional $33 Billion To Help Aid Ukraine In Russian War

President Biden has already helped to provide Ukraine with aid as the fight against Russia continues. However, on Thursday, Biden asked Congress to approve an additional $33 billion to continue to support Ukraine during this time.

According to CNBC, on Thursday, Biden says the money will go to funding humanitarian and military aid in Ukraine through September of this year. Among the $33 billion that has been requested, $20.4 billion would be for additional security and military assistance. The money will also go to U.S. efforts of supporting European security along with the other NATO allies.

Biden said in his request,

“It’s not cheap. But caving to aggression is going to be more costly if we allow it to happen. We either back the Ukrainian people as they defend their country, or we stand by as the Russians continue their atrocities and aggression in Ukraine every day.”

Aside from helping with security and military assistance, $8.5 billion would be used to help support Ukraine’s economy, including their government, food, energy, and health care. Another $3 billion from the money requested would go towards humanitarian support in the form of wheat and other commodities, which will help people outside of Ukraine who are affected by the increased prices for food, which have been caused by Russia’s block of Ukrainian ships.

As previously reported, just last month Biden announced $800 million in military aid to Ukraine as the war against Russia continued. Prior to that, he signed into law a bill that provided $13.6 billion in aid to the country.

Biden’s latest request comes as the war between Ukraine and Russia begins to enter its third month.
